Osteoporosis Prevention

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose their strength and become fragile and prone to breaking.

Why does it matter?

Broken bones in older adulthood can cause pain, permanent disability, need for surgical intervention, and even mortality.

Benefit of Lifestyle Intervention

Females have been shown to reach peak bone mass by their late 20’s with a decrease beginning in the 30’s. In females this is dependent on a variety of factors including lifestyle behaviors in adolescence and young adulthood. Reaching a higher peak bone mass through early lifestyle intervention is associated with lower rates of osteoporosis development as older adults. This is why it is important for young women to be aware that their lifestyle and behaviors now impact their health and functionality later in life. With this being said lifestyle behaviors in older adults have also been shown to impact development of osteoporosis, as well as the progression of osteopenia and osteoporosis by impacting the rate of loss of bone mass. It is never too early or too late to help preserve your health and function.
